On a so-called war damage map from the Vienna City Archives, you can listen to the personal recollections of resistance fighters Paul Vodicka, Helene Neuhaus and Heinrich Klein via audio jacks. This work is intended to raise awareness of events that often receive little or no mention in Austrian historiography.
In the summer of 2019, a friend put me in touch with Paul Vodicka. After an intensive period of research, I arranged a meeting and interviewed him about his childhood, the resistance and the post- war period. What I remember most about him is his great sense of humor and his charismatic personality.
As part of my bachelor thesis titled „What contribution did Austrian resistance fighters make to the liberation of Vienna in 1945?“, I reaserched about the forms and in extends of Austrian resistance againts the Nazi regime. The structure of the thesis consists two main chapters: „Historical Overview“ and „Work in the Underground“, which will serve as the basis for understanding the developments leading up to the liberation actions in May 1945.
Through this in-depth investigation, I aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of the resistance movement in Austria and the crucial role played by individuals such as Paul Vodicka in the liberation of Vienna. By analyzing historical events and the actions of resistance fighters, I hope to contribute to a greater understanding of the complex political and social dynamics of this period in Austrian history.
